Penn Connects is an inspiring and achievable vision for the future of the entire campus and, in particular, the new and existing land in the east. It sets forth a vision rooted in the tradition and history of the campus; one which extends and enhances the successes of previous planning and design initiatives that have transformed the campus, such as the creation of Locust and Woodland Walks and Blanche Levy Park.
The creation of concept corridors, or “Bridges of Connectivity,” enliven the pedestrian experience and create opportunities for vibrant development.
Living and Learning
Walnut Street is the main gateway connecting Center City with the core of the Penn campus. The plan enlivens an academic and research environment, with retail, office, hospitality, and residential uses. This mixed-use redevelopment along Walnut Street will extend a vibrant commercial corridor from Rittenhouse Square to 40th Street, creating an important gateway connection.
Sports and Recreation
This corridor will extend Locust and Smith Walks to the east, linking the center of campus life with new open spaces at the Palestra and Franklin Field. It continues eastward to provide access to the new urban park and recreation fields. A pedestrian bridge is envisioned to cross the Schuylkill River and connect with the Schuylkill Banks Park and Trail system.
Health Sciences and Cultural
Envisioned as the gateway to the campus along a reconstructed South Street bridge, this corridor creates a strong physical link to the Health System campus and to the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, which in undergoing a plan for renovation and expansion.
Anchored by the new Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine, this corridor will connect Penn’s Health System campus and School of Medicine with new riverfront opportunities for future medical and research space expansions.
Mixed-Use at 30th and Walnut Streets
A new north-south circulation spine will connect existing and planned development, creating a convenient access route for parking, recreation, and open space amenities.
